.htaccess and other .files not backupped when in website root-directory

Dear All,

today I had to restore a Wordpress-site from one of our daily backups. Unfortunately, after restorting the backup, the problem was worse as every link in the Wordpress-site stopped working.

It seems that the .htaccess file was not part of the backup. I checked every backup of that website, but it has been missing in all of them.

I noticed that this happened for all our websites that are structured as follows:
/www/wwwroot/website1/.htaccess

but not for website where there is first a subfolder, like:
/www/wwwroot/website2/public_html/.htaccess

It seems like all the .-files from website1 are omitted in the backup (unless they are in a subfolder of the website).

For website2, all .-files in /www/wwwroot/website2/ will be omitted, but .htaccess will be part of the backup as it is in a subfolder.

Is this common behaviour? We use the standard aapanal backup-cronjob for our daily backups, we did not make any adaptation.

Is there a setting in the cronjob where I can request to also add the .htaccess-file for website1 ?

What is your panel version? Are there any of these files in the backed up compressed files?
I tested it to restore .htacces files normally

We are using the latest version 7.0.22 .

I did some further investigation and indeed: the .htaccess file is part of the backup compressed file, it is there, but when I choose to do a restore from the aapanel menu, the .-files and .-directories from the website's root-folder will be omitted for some reason?

The problem is as follows: the restore will put back the .htaccess file if it is in a subdirectory of the website folder (for example /www/wwwroot/website2/**public_html**/.htaccess will be recovered correctly)

But if the .htaccess (or any .-file or .-directory) is in the rootfolder of the website, they will be part of the compressed backup file but will be omitted when restoring.

For example: /www/wwwroot/website1/.htaccess or /www/wwwroot/website1/.wellknown will be part of the compressed backup-file, but will not be recovered and simply omitted.

I now know that I can recover them manually from the compressed file (thanks for that insight) but I do not understand why they won't be put back during the restoring-process

If the OS version matters (which I doubt, but just for completion's sake) :

Indeed, I have been trying to replicate it.

When I make a "fresh" website just for testing with a few .-dotfiles in the root-folder and in some subdirectories. When I actively backup and restore it, it works absolutely fine.

Also the original website that gave me the problem on the 19th of August: I have manually clicked on "Backup" and then "Restore" and then indeed this "manually" made backup from today (21st of August) gives no problem: .htaccess and .wellknown get restored.

But when I take the backup made on the 19th of August (the one made by aapanel-cronjob) and restore it: again .htaccess and .wellknown get omitted when they are part of the root-folder of the website (when they are in subdirectories, there is no problem).

Is there a way to read the log-file that is briefly shown during the restoring process? It just goes away automatically without me being able to read it. Maybe there is a clue in there. All I managed to do was take a quick screenshot, but it only shows a small portion of the restorting process and it goes too fast for me to read it in real time

I do not know of this is of importance, but I noticed that there are some differences between the "daily cronjob"-backups and the "manual"-backups.

When I click on the button "Backup" (which I encircled in red), a manual backup of that moment in time is being made. The filename of that backup is "website-timestamp.zip". When I restore this manual backup, the .htaccess-file is included in the restoration.

But we have a cron-job running daily (which is part of the aapanel-cronjobs) called Backup site [ ALL ] which makes a backup of all our websites during the night.
These backups are called "web_website-timestamp.tar.gz". (I have encircled them in blue in the screenshot)

When I restore one of these cron-job -backups, the .htaccess-file and the .wellknown-folder will not be restored when they are part of the website-rootfolder. The .-files in subdirectories do get restored, so that is no problem.

The .htaccess file is part of both the .zip backups and the .tar.gz backups , but for some reason it does not get restored in the .tar.gz case. I took a mental note of this and made an extra extract of the .tar.gz to recover the .htaccess file. My website is back up and running, and maybe this is an isolated case, but it confused me a lot so I hope this information can help other aapanel-users (or maybe there is a solution to this?)

Please check whether there is a new directory under the directory name with the website directory name, and whether there are only files starting with.

thank you, yes , for some reason there is now also a folder website.com within the rootdirectory of website.com , and this one contains all the .-files and the .wellknown-directory that were supposed to be in the rootdirectory.

Is this expected behaviour?

This only happens when I restore the .gz file, it doesn't occur when I restore a .zip-file .
